Lisbon Airport (Aeroporto Humberto Delgado, IATA: LIS) is just 7 km from the city centre — one of the closest major European airports to a capital city. That's both good and confusing: "it's so close" leads a lot of travellers to underestimate how to get there efficiently, especially with luggage.
Your options at a glance
- Metro (Linha Vermelha) — Cheapest option. ~25 min to Marquês de Pombal, €1.50–1.85. No luggage assistance, can be crowded, requires navigating stairs and connections.
- Aerobus — Runs to key stops in the centre. ~30–45 min depending on traffic. €4.00. Limited stops, no door-to-door.
- Taxi — Available outside Arrivals. Fixed municipal rate applies. Queues can be long at peak times, vehicle quality varies, and there's no prior booking or flight tracking.
- Uber/Bolt — App-based option. Pickup area is on the departures level, not arrivals — confusing for first-time visitors. Prices fluctuate with demand and surge pricing applies at busy times.
- Private transfer — Pre-booked driver meets you at arrivals with a name board. Fixed price, flight tracking, luggage assistance. From €29.90 to the city centre.
The metro — best for solo travellers travelling light
The red line (Linha Vermelha) connects the airport to central Lisbon efficiently. The journey to Marquês de Pombal takes about 25 minutes and costs €1.50 with a reloadable Viva Viagem card (you'll need to buy one for €0.50 on top). You can connect to the blue, yellow and green lines to reach most parts of the city.
The catch: stairs, escalators, and platforms with limited space for large suitcases. If you're travelling with more than one suitcase or with children, it gets uncomfortable quickly, especially in peak hours.
Taxi and ride-hailing — the unpredictable option
Taxis are available outside Arrivals and operate on a fixed municipal rate. The reality on the ground is less predictable: queues regularly stretch to 20–30 minutes at peak times, and the quality of vehicles and drivers varies considerably. There is no prior booking, no flight tracking, and no one waiting for you when you land.
App-based services like Uber and Bolt exist in Lisbon, but the airport experience is far from seamless. The pickup area is on a different level from Arrivals — first-time visitors consistently lose time navigating to it. Prices are not fixed and can rise sharply during busy periods, which often coincide with exactly the moments you most need a reliable ride.
Private transfer — best for families and groups
A pre-booked private transfer changes the experience at the airport entirely. Your driver monitors your flight in real time — if it's delayed, they adjust. When you land, you go through immigration and baggage claim at your own pace, exit the arrivals hall, and find someone holding a sign with your name. They take your bags, walk you to the vehicle, and drive you directly to your hotel or address.
For a solo traveller with a backpack, the metro is probably fine. For a family of four with suitcases, or anyone arriving late at night or early morning, a private transfer is worth the modest extra cost. PrimeWays transfers from Lisbon Airport start at €29.90 for a Sedan (1–3 passengers).

Meet & greet at arrivals, flight tracking included. From €29.90. Fixed price, no surprises.
Going directly to Sintra, Cascais or Fátima?
Many travellers arrive at Lisbon Airport and want to go directly to another destination — Sintra, Cascais, the Algarve, or even Porto — without going into the city at all. This is straightforward with a private transfer: just book with your actual destination, and the driver takes you directly from arrivals to wherever you're staying. No city layover, no extra luggage handling.
